Postharvest grain system maintenance is essential for efficient operations next season. GSI District Manager Dave Ellis advises farmers to address maintenance promptly, stating, “An ounce of prevention can help save farmers tons of problems next season.”
Maintenance recommendations include -
- Grain Pit - Clean the grain pit to avoid debris accumulation and rotting grain. Ensure sump pumps are functional.
- Conveyors - Inspect bearings, belts, and buckets for wear and replace as necessary. Tighten loose belts.
- Bins - Check for damage that could lead to water intrusion, clear debris, and secure bin integrity.
- Aeration - Clean fans and inspect motor connections to prevent performance issues.
Ellis also stresses the importance of grain dryer upkeep. He recommends farmers document potential repairs and consult their grain handling equipment dealer for professional inspections.
Steps for grain dryer maintenance -
- Disconnect power and gas for safety.
- Clean out all remaining material from the dryer. Leave doors open during downtime.
- Check control panels for pest infestations or structural damage and repair promptly.
- Inspect ignition wires and tighten any loose connections. Replace worn-out parts as needed.
- Lubricate chains and inspect bearings for efficiency during the offseason.
