SDSPA Webinar Supports Organic Farming Growth

SDSPA Webinar Supports Organic Farming Growth

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota Specialty Producers Association is organizing an educational webinar focused on organic dry bean production. The session highlights important agronomic practices and aims to support farmers who are interested in improving their organic farming systems. The webinar features Ben Brockmueller from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who shares knowledge on crop production and sustainable farming methods.

The webinar explains different aspects of dry bean farming, starting from variety selection to overall agronomic management in organic systems. It provides useful guidance for both small-scale and large-scale farmers. The session also discusses how dry beans can adapt to different farm sizes and conditions, making them a flexible and valuable crop.

Brockmueller is part of the Organic and Sustainable Cropping Systems program led by Dr. Erin Silva. His work focuses on developing diverse cropping systems that use reduced tillage methods. Reduced tillage is important because it helps improve soil health, reduce erosion, and support long-term farm sustainability.

During the webinar, Brockmueller will explain how reduced tillage can be integrated into organic farming systems. This helps farmers manage soil more effectively while maintaining productivity. The session also focuses on practical strategies that farmers can apply directly to their operations.

The webinar is designed for both new and experienced producers. It helps those who want to transition to organic farming or improve their current practices. It also provides information on meeting the latest regulatory requirements for organic production.

This program is supported by the United States Department of Agriculture through the Transition to Organic Partnership Program. The initiative works to assist farmers in adopting organic practices and building strong, sustainable farming systems.

The webinar will be held virtually on April 29 at 1:00 p.m., Central Time. For registration, visit: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/OnASmqJeSiqEHPTl7tskrQ#/registration
