South Dakota State University (SDSU) announces a new interim leadership team for SDSU Extension, ensuring strong support for farmers, ranchers, and youth during a time of transition. Three experienced professionals will guide key programs while national searches for permanent leaders are planned.
Alexander “Sandy” Smart is named interim director of SDSU Extension after the retirement of Karla Trautman. Smart brings more than 20 years of teaching and research experience and over 15 years of extension service.
He previously led the Agriculture and Natural Resources programs for four years and earlier served as assistant department head and professor in the Department of Natural Resource Management. Smart says he looks forward to working with staff to strengthen relationships with stakeholders and improve communication.
Rosie Nold becomes interim program director of South Dakota 4-H. Nold has a long history with 4-H programming at county, state, and national levels. She currently leads global agricultural leadership programs and serves on several national youth livestock committees.
Nold is committed to advancing youth education in livestock and agriculture while building on the strength of existing programs supported by staff and volunteers.
Heather Gessner steps in as interim director of Agriculture and Natural Resources programming while Smart leads extension overall.
Gessner has worked with SDSU Extension for more than 24 years and focuses on farm financial planning, business management, and rural behavioral health. She looks forward to supporting staff as they help South Dakota farmers and ranchers grow their operations.
Dean Joe Cassady praises the team for their dedication and leadership, expressing confidence that SDSU Extension will continue delivering impactful programs. National searches for the permanent SDSU Extension director and 4-H program director will begin soon.
This interim leadership ensures SDSU Extension continues to provide valuable resources, education, and support for South Dakota’s agricultural community and the next generation of young leaders.
