Welcoming new calves into a feedlot is an important job for any cattle producer. Proper care during the first few days can protect herd health and improve long-term performance.
Experts from South Dakota State University recently shared practical guidance for sourcing and receiving calves to help farmers succeed.
The first step is careful sourcing. Farmers should buy calves from trusted sellers who maintain strong vaccination and health programs.
Knowing the background of each calf, including vaccinations and weaning history, helps prevent disease spread and keeps animals healthy from day one.
When the calves arrive, immediate health checks are essential. Trained staff should observe calves for signs of illness such as coughing, nasal discharge, or unusual behavior. Quick identification of sick animals reduces stress and helps prevent sickness from moving through the herd.
Nutrition is another key factor. Provide clean water and a balanced starter feed as soon as the calves enter the lot. Good nutrition supports immune systems and helps calves adjust to their new environment faster.
Handling and housing also make a big difference. Calm, low-stress handling during unloading and penning keeps animals relaxed. Clean, dry bedding and plenty of space encourage natural movement and comfort. Reducing noise and sudden changes in the first few days lowers stress and helps calves adapt to new surroundings.
Vaccination and veterinary planning should begin early. Work with a local veterinarian to set a health protocol that includes booster shots and deworming schedules. Early medical care builds a strong defence against common feedlot diseases.
Finally, consistent daily observation is critical. Checking the herd every day for signs of illness or injury ensures quick action when needed. By focusing on health, nutrition, and low-stress handling, farmers can create a safe start for new calves and improve their long-term success in the feedlot.
