The Northern Plains Forage Association is preparing to host its annual meeting, bringing together forage producers, students, industry experts, and Extension specialists for a full day of learning and networking.
The event takes place on December 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Brandon Holiday Inn Express in Brandon, South Dakota.
The meeting is open to everyone, and membership is not required to attend. Participants will have the chance to connect with others in the forage industry while gaining valuable knowledge from speakers and hands-on discussions.
Continuing education credits will be available for Certified Crop Advisers, offering added value for those seeking professional development.
The day begins with registration and vendor interaction at 9:30 a.m. Following a welcome session at 10:00 a.m., the event moves into its first presentation at 10:10 a.m., focused on alfalfa weevil management, presented by Erika Rodbell from Forage Genetics International. This session helps producers understand current challenges and strategies in alfalfa production.
At 11:00 a.m., Bryan Jorgensen of Jorgensen Land & Cattle discusses diverse cropping systems and livestock integration, highlighting how mixed systems support soil health and forage growth. Lunch and vendor interaction follow at noon, providing time for conversation and networking.
The afternoon continues with a baleage panel at 1:00 p.m., featuring local producers Dan Funke and Josh Schmidt. They share their experiences and advice on baleage production.
At 2:00 p.m., SDSU Extension specialists Sean Robinson and Pete Sexton present information on sorghum and corn intercropping, including how these crops support feedlot backgrounding diets in southeastern South Dakota.
The meeting ends with the Association’s business session and board elections at 3:00 p.m.
Registration costs $20 for non-members, while members may attend for free. A special one-time membership rate of $65 is available, which includes the cost of the meeting. Lunch is included for all attendees. Registration is available online.
