South Dakota Boosts Incentives for Climate-Smart Farming

South Dakota Boosts Incentives for Climate-Smart Farming

South Dakota is shining its spotlight on a few key areas: decreasing tillage, curtailing nitrogen loss, and introducing cover crops. Leading this initiative are the American Coalition for Ethanol and South Dakota State University (SDSU), championing a five-year initiative funded federally. The aim is to reward farmers who lean into climate-smart practices.

Insiders have noted that these compensation rates tower over what’s currently offered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service – potentially up to triple in some cases. Brennan Lewis, a dedicated SDSU research associate, is gearing up to gather farm data, which will serve as the foundation for the Regional Conservation Partnership Program.

The focus region spans seven counties in southeast South Dakota. And while approximately 12,000 acres are already committed, there's room for expansion. Feedback from local growers reveals that for many, it's not about the money. The sharing of their eco-journey and data is their prime motivator.

Collaboration is at the heart of this venture, with organizations like the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council, Dakota Ethanol, and Cultivating Conservation all onboard.

Those with interest in this green initiative are encouraged to reach out to Katie Muckenhirn at the American Coalition for Ethanol, kmuckenhirn@ethanol.org.
