South Dakota Farmers Highlight Differences in Food Pricing

South Dakota Farmers Highlight Differences in Food Pricing

Farmers and ranchers in South Dakota face a unique problem. Even with rising markets, their earnings clearly contrast with the prices consumers see at the grocery store. To highlight this gap, South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) held an event where they served lunch to State Fair attendees for just 42 cents, the amount family farmers get from the ingredients.

Parade ranchers expressed concerns, noting the price variation between consumer costs and farmers' earnings. A typical steak at the grocery counter costs much more than what the farmer earns from it.

Highlighting the crucial role of agriculture in South Dakota's economy, the Farmers Share Lunch event has been an enduring tradition. Karla Hofhenke, SDFU's Executive Director, pointed out that it educates South Dakotans about the intricacies of farming and livestock-raising economics. The aim is to rally support for the hardworking South Dakota families dedicated to agriculture.

Visitors have been surprised by the 42-cent price point, especially when compared to typical grocery expenses.

Beyond just consumer education, SDFU remains committed to enriching the knowledge of farm and ranch families. One such effort is the Farm Safety Quiz Bowl championships for teens during the Farmers Union Day at the State Fair. Doug Sombke, SDFU President, underlines the importance of safety in agriculture, noting that the Quiz Bowl isn't just for the youth but educates spectators of all ages.

The union has been actively discussing landowner rights, particularly after Summit Carbon Solutions proposed eminent domain for pipeline installation on private South Dakota land. This raised concerns among Lesmeister and Sombke, who will participate in a public discussion forum alongside other South Dakotan voice.

SDFU's grassroots policies prioritize community needs and aspirations, demonstrating dedication to addressing community needs.
