South Dakota's family farmers and ranchers recently convened at the 122nd National Farmers Union (NFU) Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona. Their mission is to champion policies that foster agricultural growth and enhance rural communities.
Doug Sombke, President of the South Dakota Farmers Union and a farmer from Conde, underscores the importance of grassroots policy. "These members care about policy because grassroots policy, voted on by farmers and ranchers, is what guides our organization’s lobbying efforts in South Dakota and Washington, D.C.," he states.
The convention saw more than 200,000 farmers and ranchers from across the U.S. discuss policies and strategies, with South Dakota delegates playing a crucial role.
Their agenda included opposition to anti-competitive practices in livestock markets, protection of property rights, and ensuring the safe transport of hazardous materials through pipelines.
NFU Vice President Jeff Kippley, a farmer from Aberdeen, praised the organization's credibility, noting its independence from special interest groups.
The convention also served as a platform for Kippley's unopposed run for a second term, highlighting the ongoing commitment of farmers to advocate for the agricultural community.
The South Dakota delegation, comprising 14 elected members, brought diverse perspectives to the convention. Among them, young farmer Tonner Bowman from Mitchell, voiced his pride in shaping the Farmers Union policy, emphasizing the shared challenges and opportunities within the farming community.
The engagement of South Dakota's delegates at the NFU Convention demonstrates their dedication to advancing agricultural interests and rural life, highlighting the vital role of grassroots advocacy in shaping the future of farming.
