The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association invites the public to vote for the 2025 South Dakota Specialty Crop Producer of the Year Award. Voting remains open until January 11, 2026. This award honors a farmer who makes a strong and lasting impact on specialty crop production in South Dakota.
Specialty crops include fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and nursery crops, including floriculture. These crops support local food systems and provide fresh food options for communities across the state. The award is supported by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.
Three finalists move forward for public voting. They include Shannon Mutschelknaus of Wayward Springs LLC in Aurora, Jeff and Jolene Stewart of Stewart’s Aronia Acres in Wagner, and Denise and Mark Venner of Venner Farm in Pierre. Each candidate shows strong dedication to growing specialty crops and supporting South Dakota agriculture.
The Specialty Crop Producer of the Year Award recognizes farmers who show leadership in the agricultural industry. The winner actively supports the growth and success of local food systems. The award also honors producers who invest time in mentoring new and beginning farmers. These efforts help build a strong future for specialty crop farming in South Dakota.
The winner will be announced at one of the South Dakota Specialty Producers Summits in February 2026. The events will take place on February 13 in Rapid City and February 20 in Huron. These summits bring together growers, partners, and community members to share knowledge and celebrate success.
The award recipient will receive a plaque, a free conference pass to the Producer Summit, and a one-year membership in the South Dakota Specialty Producers Association. The winner will also be featured in a statewide press release, on the SDSPA website, on social media, and in the association newsletter.
Public voting allows community members to support local farmers and recognize their work in growing healthy and sustainable food for South Dakota families.
