South Dakota State University is preparing to host its 140th spring commencement on May 9 at First Bank and Trust Arena. The university will hold three ceremonies as more than 1,800 students plan to receive their degrees. Four students are selected to speak at the event, each representing different academic paths and experiences.
Haley Mouser is graduating with a degree in animal science. She grew up on a Hereford cattle operation and stayed active in livestock programs. Her interest in public speaking and cattle led her to continue her education and develop new skills. At SDSU, she became involved in research and honors programs and developed an interest in meat science. She plans to continue her studies in human nutrition.
“SDSU has helped me grow as a person in the way that networking and connections mean that much more,” Mouser said. I think at this point in my life, being able to look back and see how all of those connections have propelled me to where I am now, that has been an incredible eye-opening realization.”
Hannah Moret is completing a degree in elementary education with a minor in biology. She remains active in student groups and leadership roles during her time at the university. After graduation, she plans to begin her teaching career and support young learners.
“One thing I’ll really miss about SDSU is probably all the friends I’ve made, and the professors and the connections. They genuinely care about their students and what’s going on in their lives and where they’re heading, and I’m going to miss it,” Moret said.
Tricia Serrao is a master’s student who focuses on biology and microbiology. She moved from India to pursue her education and became a leader on campus. She contributes through teaching, mentoring, and research work, earning recognition for her efforts.
“I think just the motivation of contributing toward somebody’s life or science in general has always kept me going,” Serrao said.
Hayden Bentz is graduating with a degree in human biology. He serves in student leadership roles and participates in campus activities. He plans to attend medical school after graduation.
“Above everything else, the people of SDSU are what truly makes it such a special institution in higher education,” Bentz said.
