South Dakota State University Extension is set to host an important communication and conflict resolution workshop featuring farm and ranch family transition expert Elaine Froese.
The workshop, titled “Breaking Barriers in Farm and Ranch Family Communication,” will take place on November 19, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST at the Ramkota Hotel in Pierre.
Participants can register for the workshop by visiting the SDSU Extension Events page and searching for “families.” Tickets are priced at $175, which includes lunch and all materials for up to four family members. For groups larger than four, an additional fee of $30 per person applies.
Elaine Froese, often referred to as “Canada’s farm whisperer,” is a certified professional speaker, farmer, and award-winning author. This full-day workshop aims to assist farm and ranch families, as well as agricultural professionals, in navigating challenging conversations that can significantly influence their operations and long-term success.
Attendees will engage in interactive exercises and receive practical advice on effectively communicating about sensitive topics and managing conflicts constructively.
“We're excited to have Elaine discuss with our farm and ranch families across South Dakota the importance of communication and how to overcome common challenges,” said an SDSU Extension representative. “We welcome families to participate, whether they are starting to discuss the future or are already navigating changes. This workshop will equip you with the necessary tools to advance your operation.”
The morning session will focus on understanding why certain topics are often avoided and how to initiate difficult conversations. Participants will gain tools for clear, respectful communication and strategies for handling emotions during challenging discussions.
In the afternoon, the workshop will address conflict dynamics, helping attendees recognize conflict triggers and patterns. Participants will identify their own conflict styles and learn techniques to de-escalate conflicts. The day will conclude with a question-and-answer session, providing additional insights and support.
This workshop presents a valuable opportunity for farm and ranch families to enhance their communication skills and foster a positive working environment, ultimately contributing to the longevity and success of their agricultural operations.
