The Sand County Foundation, in collaboration with national sponsor American Farmland Trust, presents the Leopold Conservation Award to landowners in 28 states, recognizing their outstanding contributions to conservation.
In South Dakota, the award is presented alongside partners such as the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association and the South Dakota Grassland Coalition.
Named in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award encourages landowners to consider conservation opportunities on their property. Leopold’s influential book, “A Sand County Almanac,” advocates for a “land ethic,” which emphasizes a responsible relationship between people and the land they own and manage.
Award nominations can be submitted on behalf of a landowner or by the landowners themselves. The nomination form is available online, and the deadline for submissions is March 7, 2025. Recipients of the award will have the opportunity to host a tour and a video production team during the summer and will participate in a fall award presentation.
“These award recipients are examples of how Aldo Leopold’s land ethic is alive and well today,” said Kevin McAleese, President and CEO of Sand County Foundation. “Their dedication to conservation is an inspiration to their peers and serves as a reminder of the importance of thoughtful agricultural practices for clean water, healthy soil, and wildlife habitat.”
John Piotti, President and CEO of American Farmland Trust, also praised the award recipients, stating, “Exemplary conservation involves not only the land itself but the people who care for it. This award recognizes the integral role of both the land and the stewards who manage it.”
The Leopold Conservation Award Program in South Dakota is made possible through the generous support of numerous organizations, including the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, South Dakota Grassland Coalition, and several others committed to promoting responsible land stewardship and conservation practices.
The award highlights the importance of sustainable agriculture and the continued efforts of landowners to safeguard natural resources for future generations.
