South Dakota State University (SDSU) has introduced a unique opportunity for students interested in the beef cattle industry through the Collegiate Cattlemen’s Club. Inspired by senior animal science student Isaac Berg's visit to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association's Cattlecon, this club aims to bring together like-minded individuals passionate about cattle.
The club's establishment in spring has seen remarkable growth, with meetings attracting over 100 students. Club President Mitchell VanderWal emphasizes the club's role in engaging students with the industry and university they love. The club's activities include hosting industry professionals who discuss current issues and trends, providing members with a broader perspective on ranch operations and future opportunities.
Unlike other clubs at SDSU, the Collegiate Cattlemen’s Club focuses on the production side of cattle, offering a platform for students to learn about industry challenges and advancements. Future plans include organizing ranch visits across South Dakota and facilitating student participation in events like the NCBA CattleCon.
This initiative reflects a growing interest among young people in agricultural careers and industry involvement. It serves as an exemplary model of how educational institutions can support student interests in agriculture, fostering a new generation of industry professionals.
