Cow Calving Camp Training in Mitchell

Cow Calving Camp Training in Mitchell

By Scout Nelson

SDSU Extension presents an interactive Cow Calf Calving Camp in Mitchell to support farmers, ranchers, and students who want to improve their calving skills. This training event focuses on helping participants understand the calving process and learn simple methods to care for cows and calves during labor and after birth.

The camp takes place at the SDSU Extension Mitchell Regional Center in South Dakota. It offers a three-hour evening learning program designed for both new and experienced livestock producers. The program includes hands-on learning, group discussions, and guided training sessions led by livestock specialists.

One of the main learning topics is the stages of labor. Participants learn how to recognize early signs of calving, understand what normal labor looks like, and identify when extra care is needed. This knowledge helps reduce stress for both animals and farmers and supports healthier births.

A special hands on session uses a cow and calf model to show proper delivery methods. This activity allows participants to practice correct positioning and learn safe techniques that can prevent injury to cows and newborn calves. These practical lessons help build confidence and improve animal care on farms.

The camp also covers calf processing and required supplies. Farmers learn about basic tools, health checks, and early calf care steps that support strong growth. In addition, the program explains record keeping practices. Simple record keeping helps track calving dates, calf health, and farm productivity.

Registration for the camp is limited to a small group to provide personal learning support. The fee includes learning materials and a meal. The camp supports better animal care, safer calving practices, and stronger farm management skills.

This training opportunity helps strengthen livestock knowledge and encourages responsible farming practices. It also supports future generations who are interested in agriculture and animal care. Visit Eventbrite to register.
