The South Dakota Farm Bureau (SDFB) and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) recently honored 44 farms and ranches that have been in the same family for 100 years or more. This special recognition took place at the South Dakota State Fair, celebrating the enduring legacy of these family-owned agricultural operations.
SDFB President Scott VanderWal, alongside Governor Kristi Noem, Lt. Governor Larry Rhoden, and Secretary of Agriculture and Natural Resources Hunter Roberts, recognized the remarkable accomplishments of these families.
The event highlighted the longevity and dedication of farms and ranches that have reached significant milestones of 100, 125, and 150 years of continuous family ownership.
Among the 2024 honorees were Centennial farms (100 years), Quasquicentennial farms (125 years), and Sesquicentennial farms (150 years). Some of the notable honorees include the Benting, Bunger, Burkard, and Gerber families for reaching their 100-year milestone, and the Behnke, Bogue, and Brandlee families for reaching 125 years.
The Brendtro, Elverson, and Solheim families were honored for their 150 years of family farming.
This recognition reflects the enduring spirit and commitment of South Dakota’s agricultural community, which continues to thrive and contribute to the state’s economy. The dedication of these families to maintain and preserve their farms for multiple generations serves as a testament to their hard work and passion for agriculture.
