Farm Show celebrates 80th year with community leaders

By Scout Nelson

The 2025 Watertown Winter Farm Show will celebrate its 80th year by honoring two community figures for their long-standing contributions: Dan Engebretson of Watertown and Gale Filipek of Raymond. The event is scheduled for February 12-15, 2025, at the Codington County Extension Complex.

Dan Engebretson has been a prominent figure in the Farm Show for many years, participating in various roles such as an educator, banker, and president of the Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce.

Dan has been instrumental in the Chamber’s Agricultural Committee, serving as chairman in 1988. Reflecting on his early memories of the Farm Show, Engebretson shared, "My first memory of the Farm Show was the warm welcome from all the exhibitors, other bankers, ranchers, farmers, and the extension service." Tim Sheehan, President and CEO of the Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce, remarked, "Recognizing Dan during this 80th year of the Farm Show is like taking a page from the Chamber history book."

Gale Filipek, the breed manager for the Simmental Show & Sale, has attended the Farm Show for 34 consecutive years.

Gale purchased his first heifer at the event in 1991 and began consigning animals three years later. "I need to thank Rod Hurlbut for getting me started. Without him, I wouldn't be here today," Filipek said. He sees the Farm Show as a vital opportunity for small breeders to connect with potential buyers. "We're all in the same boat, rowing for the same purpose," he added.

Both Engebretson and Filipek have witnessed the growth and evolution of the Farm Show. Engebretson recalled his role in planning and constructing the exhibit hall, enhancing the barn, and meeting new people every year.

Chuck Langner, an Ag Committee member, praised Engebretson’s dedication, saying, "Dan really knows how important volunteers are to keep the Farm Show running smoothly." Filipek also noted improvements like upgraded wash racks and a better sound system. "The fun part about the Farm Show for us is that it was our family's winter vacation," he said.

Their enduring contributions will be celebrated at this milestone event, highlighting their impact on the Farm Show and the local agricultural community.
