SDSU crop hour tackles key challenges

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is hosting its popular Crop Hour webinar series, running from January 7 through February 27, 2025. These free, interactive online sessions take place every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 10:00 a.m. CST (9:00 a.m. MT), offering timely agricultural insights to South Dakota crop producers.

From January 21–23, the webinars will focus on Insect Integrated Pest Management (IPM). SDSU’s agronomy team will share research-driven approaches for managing insect pests in the state’s major agronomic crops. Participants will learn about practical solutions that enhance productivity while minimizing environmental impacts.

Crop Hour sessions cover a wide range of topics vital to the agricultural community. These include soil and water management, pest control strategies, plant disease and fungicide application, forage production, crop management, regenerative agriculture, climate adaptation, and business strategies.

This diverse lineup provides a comprehensive educational experience for growers looking to strengthen their practices.

The webinars are free for all participants, but registration is required. Certified Crop Advisers who attend can earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs), making these sessions both informative and professionally beneficial. Non-produce growers and those outside of agriculture are welcome to participate for an additional fee to cover course materials.

The sessions are designed to encourage dialogue, with time allocated for participants to ask questions and share their experiences. This collaborative environment fosters connections between producers and experts, ensuring that challenges are addressed with research-based solutions.

For more details about the program, contact SDSU Extension specialists Connie Strunk or Sara Bauder, who are available to assist attendees with inquiries.

SDSU Crop Hour remains an essential resource for South Dakota’s agricultural community, offering relevant and actionable knowledge to help producers prepare for the upcoming growing season. By addressing key challenges and opportunities, these webinars empower participants to make informed decisions for improved crop health and profitability.
