Fighting Bovine Anaplasmosis - University products' innovative approach

By Scout Nelson

In response to the challenges posed by unpredictable weather and its impact on cattle health, University Products LLC has developed a vaccine against bovine anaplasmosis, a disease primarily transmitted by ticks and biting flies, which has been detected near Woonsocket, South Dakota, highlighting the urgent need for preventive measures.

Bovine anaplasmosis, caused by Anaplasma marginale, severely impacts cattle, leading to symptoms like fever, anemia, and severe illness. Its rapid spread and difficult diagnosis, often confused with similar diseases, make early detection and intervention crucial.

Gene Luther, a researcher at University Products, underscores the silent yet swift nature of this disease, emphasizing the importance of early recognition and veterinary involvement.

In combating anaplasmosis, the focus is not only on prevention but also on responsible pharmaceutical use. The misuse of antibiotics in animal husbandry is a growing concern, with the FDA tightening regulations. Over-reliance on antibiotics can lead to resistant strains, making prevention through vaccines and biosecurity measures more sustainable and cost-effective.

University Products has developed an experimental vaccine against anaplasmosis, marking a significant step towards pharmaceutical stewardship and cattle health. The vaccine encourages cattle producers to maintain carefulness, implement fly and tick prevention programs, and collaborate with veterinarians for comprehensive herd protection.

This development marks a crucial moment in addressing the challenges faced by the cattle industry due to changing climate conditions, ensuring the health and productivity of herds across the United States.
