Free virtual workshops for aging well hosted by NDSU and SDSU extension

By Scout Nelson

The North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension and South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension are teaming up to present a unique series of virtual workshops, focusing on aging well. These sessions, accessible via Zoom, are designed to empower seniors and caregivers with crucial information and strategies for a healthy, fulfilling older age.

Scheduled on Jan. 18, Feb. 15, and March 21, each workshop begins at 10 a.m. CST and runs for one hour. These events are open to everyone, free of charge, with an option for individuals or groups to join. Community centers, libraries, and senior centers are especially encouraged to participate as watch party hosts.

The series kicks off on Jan. 18 with Susan E. Johnson-Drenth, a certified elder law attorney, discussing updates in elder law and estate planning for 2024. With her extensive experience, Johnson-Drenth will provide invaluable insights into navigating the complexities of elder law.

Following this, on Feb. 15, Michelle Kutner, State Program Director for the South Dakota Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, will delve into the vital topic of brain health. Her presentation will cover strategies for maintaining cognitive and physical health, drawing on her background in social work and her expertise with the Alzheimer's Association since April 2022.

The final session on March 21, presented by gerontologists Leacey Brown and Jane Strommen, will explore ways to adapt one’s living space for longer, safer, and more comfortable aging in place. Their focus on accessibility and practical tips will provide attendees with actionable strategies to enhance their living environments.

These workshops represent NDSU and SDSU Extension's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for seniors. As Jane Strommen says, “We are excited to offer these educational opportunities on important health and wellness topics which contribute to aging well.” This series promises to be a valuable resource for anyone interested in the aspects of aging, health, and wellness.
