Rangeland Days Builds Skills for Young Farmers

Rangeland Days Builds Skills for Young Farmers

By Scout Nelson

Rangeland and Soil Days, supported by agricultural organizations and conservation groups, provides young participants with the opportunity to learn about land and soil management while taking part in competitive activities. The event takes place over two days and focuses on building knowledge, skills, and confidence among youth involved in agriculture programs such as 4-H.

Participants can compete in three main categories during Rangeland Days: display, talk, and judging contests. Youth who take part in all three categories are eligible for the Rangeland Top Hand award, which is given to the highest overall scorer in each division. These activities also help students prepare for county fairs by allowing them to present their projects and receive helpful feedback.

Top performers in the talk contest may earn the chance to represent their state at the National Society for Range Management Meeting. In addition, the highest-scoring team in the Go Getter division can qualify for the National Land and Range Judging Contest held in Oklahoma City the following year.

The Soil Days judging contest is another important part of the event. Participants evaluate four different land sites for their suitability for land use and homesite development. The highest scorer receives the Soils Top Hand award, and top teams may also advance to national-level competitions.

The event also provides accommodation options through hotel blocks for participants and families. Registration is required, with a set fee that includes meals for both days. Participants must complete registration before the deadline to secure their place.
