South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension has welcomed Graig Reicks as its new weed ecology field specialist. In this role, he will provide expertise in weed management for specialty crops, pastures, rangelands, organic farms, and public areas, helping farmers and agricultural professionals tackle weed-related challenges.
Bringing Decades of Experience
With nearly 20 years of experience in agricultural research at SDSU, Reicks is well-versed in weed management, cover cropping, and sustainable farming practices. His appointment strengthens SDSU Extension’s ability to offer valuable guidance to growers and industry stakeholders.
“Graig brings close to 20 years’ worth of experience in agriculture research at South Dakota State University. He has a broad knowledge of weed management, cover crops, and crop production,” said Sandy Smart, SDSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources senior program leader.
A Background in Agricultural Science
Reicks earned his doctorate in plant science from SDSU and has been actively involved in research at the university since 2007. He has worked closely with South Dakota farmers on on-farm research projects and managed the IR-4 pesticide testing program, which supports pesticide registration for specialty crops.
Future Plans and Research Focus
His new role allows him to expand his work beyond corn and soybeans to include a wider range of cropping systems. “I’ve worked largely with corn and soybeans for the past 18 years, so expanding my horizons into different cropping systems will be interesting,” he said.
As SDSU Extension continues to support sustainable agricultural practices, Reicks will play a crucial role in helping farmers implement effective weed control strategies. His expertise will contribute to improving agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability in South Dakota and beyond.
