SDSU Webinar Focuses on Grazing Success

SDSU Webinar Focuses on Grazing Success

By Scout Nelson

SDSU Extension continues its Cattle HQ Live webinar series by offering livestock producers practical information to improve herd health, pasture management, and overall farm profitability. The free educational program will take place on the third Thursday of each month at 2:00 p.m. CDT and is presented online through Zoom, making it easy for producers to participate from any location.

The webinar series is led by Julie Walker, Professor and SDSU Extension Beef Specialist, and Erin DeHaan, Assistant Professor and SDSU Extension Beef Specialist. This month's presentation features Kaylee Wheeler, SDSU Extension Range Field Specialist, who focuses on the importance of plant diversity in grazing systems and its value for both land and livestock.

During the session, participants learn how different plant species contribute to healthier pastures and better cattle nutrition. While grass remains an important source, many non-grass plants also provide valuable nutrients. Wildflowers, shrubs, and other broadleaf plants are sometimes mistaken for invasive weeds or viewed as competition for grass production. Some producers may also believe these plants are not suitable for livestock or may even be harmful.

The webinar explains that many of these plants actually supply excellent sources of protein, energy, and essential minerals that benefit grazing cattle. In addition to supporting livestock nutrition, a diverse mix of plants helps improve grassland health by strengthening soil quality, increasing biodiversity, and creating more resilient grazing systems.

Healthy plant diversity also supports long-term pasture productivity by improving soil conditions and helping grazing land better respond to changing weather and environmental conditions. Understanding which plants provide nutritional value allows producers to make better grazing management decisions while protecting natural resources.

The online event is offered at no cost, but participants must register to receive the Zoom link and reminder emails. A single registration automatically enrolls participants for all future Cattle HQ Live sessions throughout the webinar series.
