South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is inviting farm families to attend a unique workshop focused on integrating childcare into whole farm planning. The event will take place on Wednesday, November 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the SDSU Extension Winner Regional Center, located at 325 S. Monroe, Ste. 125, Winner, South Dakota.
The workshop aims to help families balance the challenges of raising children while managing a farm. Participants will explore practical ways to design their operations for family well-being, include childcare costs in farm budgets, and address childcare as part of farm risk management.
According to Lorna Saboe-Wounded Head, SDSU Extension Family Resource Management Field Specialist, the session offers valuable insights for families at all stages—those currently farming and those still in the planning phase.
Participants will receive resources to share with their family members and advisors, including tax, legal, and business management professionals.
The evening event will begin with a meal at 5:30 p.m., followed by a presentation on integrating childcare into farm plans at 6:00 p.m. and a panel discussion at 7:15 p.m. addressing childcare challenges specific to South Dakota.
Funded by USDA North Central Region SARE and SDSU Extension, this program is part of a larger initiative to bring vital, often overlooked resources to farmers. Research from USDA and CDC highlights that reliable childcare contributes to economic growth, improved safety, and greater quality of life for farm families.
Registration costs $20 per adult or $50 per family, with childcare and a meal provided. Participants must register by November 5 to attend.
This event supports SDSU Extension’s ongoing mission to strengthen rural communities through education, family support, and sustainable farm development.
