“Small Farms, Big Ideas” Highlights Smart Farming

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) has successfully launched its “Small Farms, Big Ideas” Summer Farm Tour Series, giving farmers, agricultural professionals, and community members an opportunity to learn about modern farming practices.

The first event, Year-Round Specialty Crops and Poultry Tractors, welcomed visitors to several farms in western South Dakota. Tour stops included XS Farms near Martin, England Ranch near Midland, and Cedar Creek Gardens near Midland. Each location demonstrated different approaches that help small farms remain productive throughout the year.

During the tour, participants observed several season-extension systems designed to support specialty crop production. These included deep winter greenhouses, low tunnels, and high tunnels that allow farmers to grow crops during more months of the year. Growers explained how these systems help protect crops from changing weather while improving production and extending harvest seasons.

The tour also highlighted innovative livestock management practices. Visitors learned about poultry tractors, which are movable shelters that allow chickens to graze on fresh pasture while improving soil conditions. Free-range egg production systems were also demonstrated, showing how mobile management can improve animal welfare and pasture use.

The event provided valuable hands-on learning for producers interested in expanding or improving their farming operations. Farmers explored ways to diversify crop production, introduce specialty crops, improve pasture management, and adopt practical farming technologies that support long-term business success.

Community members also gained a better understanding of sustainable agriculture and local food production. Seeing working farms firsthand helped participants understand how innovative ideas can strengthen local food systems while supporting farm families and rural communities.
