The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Foundation plays an important role in supporting the state’s beef industry and helping families in need. The foundation began in 2013 when a group of cattlemen and cattlewomen joined together with a shared goal: to support the long-term strength of beef production in South Dakota while also giving back to local communities.
In 2014, the foundation launched its partnership with Feeding South Dakota and began hosting the annual Prime Time Gala to raise funds. The concert, auction, and raffle all help support food programs statewide.
Since the partnership began, more than $3 million has been raised. This funding has helped Feeding South Dakota provide over 1.6 million pounds of beef to individuals and families in every county across the state.
Ryan Eichler, president of the foundation, says the partnership improves access to high-quality protein for families. When the project started, only a small percentage of the food distributed included protein. The foundation saw an opportunity to help and continues to support Feeding South Dakota’s efforts.
The foundation’s board includes many graduates of South Dakota State University, highlighting the strong connection between SDSU and the state’s beef industry. Members credit the university for shaping leaders who understand agriculture and community needs.
In addition to fundraising, the foundation invests in future beef industry professionals. In 2016, it created a scholarship program that awards around $15,000 each year to students interested in beef production and promotion. More than $140,000 has been awarded so far.
The foundation also supports hands-on education through the Fed Cattle Challenge. This program teaches high school students about feedlot operations, cattle finishing, and beef production economics. Students work with real cattle groups, follow an educational curriculum, and present their learning at the end of the program.
The foundation further expands its impact by supporting undergraduate beef-related research in partnership with SDSU. Recent projects explore innovations such as improving meat color stability and studying supplements that support immunity in calves.
The foundation hopes to grow its partnerships and continue supporting the state’s beef industry. The next Prime Time Gala is scheduled for June 20, 2026.
