South Dakota Corn Sets 2025 Agenda

South Dakota Corn Sets 2025 Agenda

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota Corn Growers Association (SDCGA) and the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council (SDCUC) have introduced their board officers for the year 2025, a crucial move amidst challenging times for the industry. DaNita Murray, Executive Director for SD Corn, emphasized the importance of leadership during these turbulent times.

"The corn industry currently faces significant headwinds including a low commodity price, increased input costs and the potential for short-term pain from tariffs on corn and corn products. With these circumstances, we’re fortunate to have a strong roster of officers on both the grower and marketing boards,” she stated.

The newly elected officers for the SDCGA include President Taylor Sumption from Frederick, Vice President Trent Kubik from Hamill, and Secretary/Treasurer Mike Cronin from Gettysburg. On the other hand, the SDCUC will see Jim Ketelhut of Pukwana stepping in as President, Jay Esser of Redfield as Vice President, and Chris Nickeson of Pierpont as Secretary/Treasurer.

Both councils play pivotal roles in advocating and promoting the interests of South Dakota's corn producers. The SDCGA focuses on policy and advocacy at both the state and national levels, ensuring that the voices of corn growers are heard and considered in legislative decisions.

Meanwhile, the SDCUC dedicates its efforts to promoting the marketing of corn within the state, across the United States, and globally. This includes funding research and educational initiatives that advance the industry.

The leadership transition comes at a time when the industry is navigating through lower commodity prices and rising input costs, exacerbated by international trade challenges. The strong leadership roster is expected to steer the associations through these complexities, fostering resilience and advancing growth in the sector.

This strategic leadership is essential as both councils work together to enhance the value and marketability of corn, driving forward both economic and agricultural development in South Dakota.
