South Dakota crop progress report

For the week ending June 23, 2024, South Dakota saw 3.4 days suitable for fieldwork, as reported by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The topsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 8% short, 66% adequate, and 25% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 1% very short, 11% short, 64% adequate, and 24% surplus.

The Field Crops Report indicated that the corn condition was rated 3% very poor, 4% poor, 21% fair, 61% good, and 11% excellent. Corn emergence was at 98%, near 100% last year and 95% for the five-year average.

The soybean condition was rated 4% very poor, 5% poor, 19% fair, 61% good, and 11% excellent. Soybeans emerged at 92%, near 96% last year, but ahead of the 87% average. Blooming was at 1%, near 5% last year and 4% average.

Winter wheat condition was rated 0% very poor, 4% poor, 23% fair, 56% good, and 17% excellent. Winter wheat headed was at 93%, near 91% last year and 89% average.

Spring wheat condition was rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 20% fair, 71% good, and 7% excellent. Spring wheat headed was at 44%, well behind 64% last year, and near 46% average.

Oats condition was rated 0% very poor, 1% poor, 15% fair, 72% good, and 12% excellent. Oats headed was at 57%, well behind 78% last year, and equal to average.

Sorghum condition was rated 0% very poor, 1% poor, 20% fair, 69% good, and 10% excellent. Sorghum headed was at 8%, near 11% last year, but ahead of 3% average.

Sunflowers planted were at 91%, near 95% last year, and equal to average. Emerged was at 59%, nearly 56% last year.

The Pasture and Range Report rated pasture and range conditions as 3% very poor, 4% poor, 25% fair, 51% good, and 17% excellent. This comprehensive report provides a clear picture of the current state of agriculture in South Dakota.
