The South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) hosted its 109th State Convention on December 11–12, 2024, in Huron. Family farmers and ranchers gathered to discuss policies, hear from agriculture experts, and celebrate grassroots efforts.
Key topics included the re-establishment of mandatory country of origin labeling (MCOOL) and the need for a new Farm Bill. MCOOL remains a priority as producers advocate for transparency in food sourcing. “More than meat needs MCOOL. Customers want to know where their food comes from, as not all countries have the same food safety standards,” shared one participant.
SDFU leaders emphasized the importance of passing an updated Farm Bill to address current market challenges. With more than 50 new lawmakers entering office in 2025, educating policymakers remains a critical goal.
Grassroots involvement was a central theme, with elected delegates preparing to present state policies at the National Farmers Union Convention in March 2025. Through open discussions, farmers and ranchers developed solutions to address key challenges like childcare accessibility and sustainable farming practices.
Youth played an active role during the event, with awards and leadership roles recognizing their contributions. The Torchbearer Award, SDFU’s highest youth honour, highlighted the achievements of young leaders. Additionally, youth shared their experiences in leadership and teamwork gained through SDFU programs.
Farmers Union members were also honoured for their service to South Dakota agriculture and rural communities. Key awards included the Minnie Lovinger Youth Education Award and the President’s Award for Excellence.
Speakers, including agriculture experts and market analysts, provided insights on issues like tax reform, weather impacts, and innovative practices. National Farmers Union President Rob Larew commended SDFU’s grassroots efforts and ongoing advocacy.
