South Dakota Grasslands Push Native Plant Growth

South Dakota Grasslands Push Native Plant Growth

By Scout Nelson

April marks National Native Plant Month, a celebration closely tied to South Dakota's rich prairie history. Grassland enthusiasts are encouraging both urban and rural landowners to dedicate spaces for native plant growth.

South Dakota's prairies, filled with deep-rooted species like tallgrass, play an important role in water absorption and habitat preservation. However, modern land use has impacted their survival. According to the World Wildlife Fund, only 53% of the Great Plains region’s grassland remains intact.

"There’s just a growing appreciation for the native grasslands that are making their way into urban areas," said a conservation advocate. "People are using big bluestem in front of commercial buildings and places like that."

Recent ad campaigns and surveys from the South Dakota Grasslands Coalition show strong bipartisan support for better grassland management. The public is increasingly recognizing the need to protect these important ecosystems, even though patience is necessary, as native plants often take one to two years to fully establish.

It is not only livestock that benefit from vibrant grasslands. "The grass helps provide habitat for many different wildlife species, whether it's migratory songbirds (or) pollinators," the conservation advocate emphasized.

For those interested in starting native plant restoration, it is recommended to visit a local Natural Resources Conservation Service office. The South Dakota Grasslands Coalition website also offers useful resources and guidance for beginners.

By planting native species, landowners can make a meaningful contribution to South Dakota’s environmental health, helping prairies and wildlife flourish for generations to come.
