South Dakota soy fuels urban innovations

By Scout Nelson

Soybeans from South Dakota are at the forefront of driving sustainability in New York City, transforming urban systems through renewable fuels and soy-based innovations. A recent tour organized by Clean Fuels Alliance America highlighted the role of soybeans in creating cleaner energy solutions and reducing emissions.

Cleaner Fleets and Air Quality:

The NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) has successfully transitioned its fleet to biodiesel and renewable diesel, incorporating over 2,500 soy-based tires.

This shift has improved urban air quality, reduced fossil fuel reliance, and eliminated traditional diesel odors. Additionally, the Staten Island Ferry operates on 100% soy-based diesel, paving the way for a broader transition to renewable fuels in maritime fleets.

Ambitious Renewable Goals:

Clean Fuels Alliance leaders outlined a vision to produce 6 billion gallons of biofuel annually by 2030, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by over 50 million tons. Collaborations with city officials are essential to achieving these sustainability milestones.

Innovations in Heating Solutions:

At the National Oil heat Research Alliance (NORA) facility, soy-based biodiesel blends are being rigorously tested for heating systems. This “bean-to-burner” narrative connects South Dakota’s soybean contributions to sustainable heating solutions, addressing supply challenges and ensuring long-term performance.

Breakthrough in Firefighting Foam:

The FDNY’s adoption of soy-based firefighting foam, free of harmful PFAS chemicals, marks a significant step toward safer and more environmentally friendly firefighting solutions.

Clean Fuels Alliance America’s efforts highlight the vital role of South Dakota’s soybeans in advancing renewable fuels, reducing emissions, and fostering a cleaner, greener future through innovative partnerships and sustainable practices.
