In the latest update from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, South Dakota farmers had nearly a full week of suitable fieldwork conditions ending November 19, 2023. Soil moisture showed mixed levels, with topsoil at 7% very short and 67% adequate, and subsoil at 8% very short and 59% adequate.
The field crops report highlighted several key findings:
Corn harvesting reached 93%, trailing last year's 99% but surpassing the five-year average of 86%.
Winter wheat showed a diverse condition spectrum, with 3% rated very poor and 8% excellent. The emergence rate of 96% outpaced both last year's and the average rate.
Sorghum and sunflower harvests slightly lagged behind last year but were close to the average, at 90% and 80%, respectively.
In terms of pasture and range conditions, they varied widely, with 10% rated very poor and 11% excellent. This broad range indicates the varied experiences of farmers across the state.
