Swine Summit Prepares Youth for Careers

Swine Summit Prepares Youth for Careers

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota Swine Summit offers youth aged 12 to 21 a valuable opportunity to learn more about the swine industry. The event is scheduled for June 12, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at various locations on the campus of South Dakota State University.

Participants will explore the SDSU Swine Education and Research Facility through guided tours. The summit also features educational sessions that focus on important topics like biosecurity, animal nutrition, daily care, showmanship, animal evaluation, and carcass anatomy and evaluation.

Youth will gain hands-on experience and practical knowledge essential for careers in swine production and agriculture. These sessions are designed to inspire interest in the swine industry while teaching the necessary skills to ensure animal health and farm success.

The summit aims to encourage young individuals to pursue education and careers in the agricultural field by offering them exposure to real-world practices and research innovations. Participants will also learn best practices in daily care routines and evaluation techniques, preparing them for future leadership roles in agriculture.

The event is free to attend, but registration is required. Participants must complete the registration form by June 7, 2025, to secure their spot.

For more information about the South Dakota Swine Summit, individuals are encouraged to contact Rafe Royall, Assistant Professor and SDSU Extension Swine Specialist.

The South Dakota Swine Summit promises a full day of learning, networking, and exciting hands-on opportunities for youth interested in the thriving swine industry.
