Corn and Soybean Planting Pace Remain Ahead of Five-year Average

For the week ending May 21, 2023, there were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork in South Dakota, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 7% very short, 29% short, 60% adequate, and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 13% very short, 31% short, 53% adequate, and 3% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

Corn planted was 76%, ahead of 58% last year and 63% for the five-year average. Emerged was 30%, well ahead of 10% last year, and ahead of 22% average.

Soybeans planted was 56%, well ahead of 31% last year, and ahead of 39% average. Emerged was 12%, ahead of 3% last year, and near 9% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 7% very poor, 15% poor, 44% fair, 34% good, and 0% excellent.

Winter wheat headed was 2%, near 1% last year and 3% average. Spring wheat planted was 95%, near 92% last year, and ahead of 90% average. Emerged was 74%, ahead of 65% last year and 63% average.

Oats condition rated 0% very poor, 5% poor, 50% fair, 43% good, and 2% excellent. Oats planted was 94%, ahead of 86% last year and 87% average. Emerged was 71%, ahead of 55% last year and 65% average.

Sorghum planted was 31%, ahead of 20% last year and 21% average.

Sunflowers planted was 3%, near 5% last year, and behind 8% average.

Pasture and Range Report:

Pasture and range conditions rated 10% very poor, 9% poor, 50% fair, 30% good, and 1% excellent.

For the week ending May 14, 2023, there were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork in South Dakota, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3% very short, 16% short, 70% adequate, and 11% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 6% very short, 33% short, 53% adequate, and 8% surplus.

Field Crops Report:

Corn planted was 49%, well ahead of 28% last year, and ahead of 41% for the five-year average. Emerged was 8%, ahead of 1% last year, and near 7% average.

Soybeans planted was 29%, ahead of 14% last year and 22% average. Emerged was 1%, near 2% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 5% very poor, 15% poor, 57% fair, 21% good, and 2% excellent.

Spring wheat planted was 84%, ahead of 76% last year and 78% average. Emerged was 37%, near 41% last year, and behind 42% average.

Oats planted was 84%, ahead of 72% last year and 77% average. Emerged was 41%, near 39% last year and 45% average.

Sorghum planted was 12%, near 10% last year and 8% average.

Sunflowers planted was 1%, equal to both last year and average.
