S.D. Layer Inventory Down 100,000, Eggs Down 3 Million

All layers in South Dakota during December 2020 totaled 2.58 million, down from 2.68 million the previous year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

South Dakota egg production during December totaled 70.3 million eggs, down from 73.0 million in 2019. December egg production per 100 layers was 2,722 eggs, compared to 2,720 eggs in 2019.

United States egg production totaled 9.60 billion during December 2020, down 2% from last year. Production included 8.33 billion table eggs, and 1.26 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.17 billion were broiler-type and 87.4 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during December 2020 averaged 391 million, down 3% from last year. December egg production per 100 layers was 2,453 eggs, up 1% from December 2019.

All layers in the United States on January 1, 2021 totaled 391 million, down 3% from last year. The 391 million layers consisted of 325 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 62.4 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.37 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on January 1, 2021, averaged 78.3 eggs per 100 layers, up 1% from January 1, 2020.

Egg-type chicks hatched during December 2020 totaled 53.4 million, up 16% from December 2019. Eggs in incubators totaled 50.8 million on January 1, 2021, up 6% from a year ago.

Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totaled 461 thousand during December 2020, up 53% from December 2019.

Broiler-type chicks hatched during December 2020 totaled 848 million, down 1% from December 2019. Eggs in incubators totaled 712 million on January 1, 2021, down slightly from a year ago.
