Cattle HQ Live Offers Grazing Insights

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension continues its free monthly webinar series, Cattle HQ Live, offering producers key insights into managing cattle health, productivity, and profitability. These webinars take place every third Thursday at 2:00 p.m. CST and feature SDSU Extension beef specialists sharing expert advice on timely cattle topics.

This month’s session focuses on alternative crop grazing as a way to extend the grazing season. Participants will hear from Julie Walker, SDSU Extension Beef Specialist, and Sara Bauder, SDSU Extension Forage Field Specialist. They will discuss how using alternative crops can benefit pasture systems and what should be considered when evaluating previously planted areas.

The discussion will cover best practices for integrating alternative crops into a grazing plan, including crop selection, forage quality, plant recovery, and the timing of use. The speakers will also provide insights on how to balance forage availability and herd nutritional needs while building a more sustainable system.

“Cattle HQ Live” is a practical and accessible resource for livestock producers seeking up-to-date strategies to improve herd outcomes.

There is no fee to attend the webinar, but registration is required to access the Zoom link and receive session reminders. Once registered, participants will be signed up for all upcoming sessions in the series.

This webinar series provides a valuable platform for continuing education in cattle and forage management. For more information or questions, contact the SDSU Extension team.
