South Dakota exports a large share of its agricultural products, but most of its production stays within the country. In 2023, 38% of the state’s agricultural goods were exported internationally, generating $5.6 billion, according to a South Dakota Trade official.
Soybeans top the list as South Dakota’s largest agricultural export. Nearly 60% of the state's soybean production is shipped overseas in the form of whole beans, soybean meals, or oil. This figure does not account for soybean meal used to feed pork and poultry, which may also be sold to foreign markets.
Despite this strong export presence, most agricultural goods produced in the state are sold domestically across the United States. This balance highlights the importance of both global and local markets for South Dakota's agricultural economy.
Over the past decade, the state’s ag exports have seen a steady rise. From $4 billion in 2014, exports grew by 40% over the next ten years, reflecting the increasing demand for South Dakota’s quality agricultural products.
Canada and Mexico are South Dakota’s leading international trading partners, regularly importing crops and food products from the state. These strong trade relationships have helped South Dakota maintain a stable and growing presence in the global agriculture market.
