SDSU Winter Wheat Event Offers Trials and Expert Talks

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension will host the 36th Annual Winter Wheat Meeting on August 21, starting at 6:30 p.m. CDT, at the City of Draper Auditorium, located at 232 Main Street, Draper, South Dakota.

This long-standing event is popular among winter wheat producers across South Dakota. It brings together experts, farmers, and agricultural professionals to discuss the latest wheat research, variety trial results, and climate updates relevant to the region.

Attendees will hear from a panel of expert speakers:

  • Dr. Sunish Sehgal, SDSU Winter Wheat Breeder, will present the 2025 Winter Wheat Variety Trial Results and provide a research update on ongoing work to improve crop yield and performance.
  • Clarence Winter, SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist, will speak about soil health and nitrogen fertility, key components in successful wheat farming.
  • Laura Edwards, SDSU Extension State Climatologist, will give a climate update, offering valuable insights on what weather conditions growers can expect during the season.

Registration is not required, and the meeting is open to everyone interested in wheat production in South Dakota. A free meal will be served before the program, sponsored by several local businesses, offering a great opportunity for community interaction and discussion.

The meeting aims to provide practical information, support better decision-making on the farm, and encourage knowledge sharing among producers. SDSU Extension continues to offer valuable outreach and education to strengthen agriculture in the region.
