The South Dakota Farm Bureau (SDFB) and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) recently recognized 44 family farms and ranches that have been in operation for over 100 years. The celebration took place at the South Dakota State Fair last month.
Among the farms celebrated, 20 received Centennial (100 years), 18 received Quasquicentennial (125 years), and 6 received Sesquicentennial (150 years) awards. The event was attended by Governor Kristi Noem, Lt. Governor Larry Rhoden, and Agriculture Secretary Hunter Roberts.
Ogren Farm – Centennial Award
The Ogren farm, located in Langford, has been in the family for over 100 years. Established by John Gustav Ogren in 1886, the farm has passed through generations, with John’s son Kenneth taking over in later years. Today, Karen Ogren and her husband Denis own and manage the farm, renting the land to family members. The farmhouse is a Sears kit home, assembled on-site in the 1920s, and has been updated over the years.
Vrchota Farm – Quasquicentennial Award
The Vrchota farm, recognized for 125 years of continuous family ownership, was established by Joe Sr. and Frank Vrchota in the early 1900s. The farm, located in Veblen Township, has stayed in the family, with Chuck Vrchota and his wife Cindy currently living on the original homestead built by Joe Sr. The Vrchota family, though spread across the U.S., gathers for reunions at the farm every year, continuing the legacy of the land.
These family farms represent the deep agricultural roots and heritage that continue to thrive in South Dakota.
