South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension, the South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA), and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will host a Cut Flower and Pumpkin Field Day on Friday, July 25, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is open to the public and highlights flower and pumpkin farming in South Dakota.
Participants will visit three farm locations, starting at Eden Acres near Alpena, followed by a stop at Swensen Pumpkin Patch near Woonsocket, and ending at Forestburg Flower Farm near Forestburg. The event is focused on hands-on learning and expert advice from experienced local growers, SDSU Extension specialists, and SDSPA staff.
The tour will cover a wide range of topics, including how to grow cut flowers, select the best flower and pumpkin varieties for South Dakota, market seasonal crops, extend the growing season using high tunnels, get involved in agritourism, and build a strong farm brand.
This rain or shine event welcomes families, but pets are not allowed. Participants should come prepared for moderate walking and wear sturdy shoes suitable for farm environments. If any attendees need mobility accommodations, they are encouraged to contact Kristine Lang at least one week before the event.
The field day begins at Eden Acres (21614 398th Ave., Alpena, SD). Directions to the pumpkin field and the final flower farm stop will be shared at the first location. Signs will be placed to help guide attendees to parking areas.
This event offers a valuable opportunity for new and experienced producers to explore specialty crops, connect with local experts, and gain ideas for growing their farm businesses through flowers, pumpkins, and agritourism.
