Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), a major dairy cooperative, will close its ingredient processing facility in Pollock, South Dakota. The closure, effective for a facility also known as DairiConcepts, is part of DFA's strategy to optimize milk marketing and balance supply across its network.
While this closure will affect 33 full-time and 4 part-time employees, DFA emphasized the value of the Pollock plant employees' contributions and pledged support during the transition. "We appreciate their hard work and dedication," DFA stated. The cooperative operates 46 plants nationwide, with Pollock being one of seven ingredient plants in its Central Area.
Despite the closure, DFA assures continued service to its customers. Raw milk processed at Pollock will be redirected to nearby facilities, including Cass-Clay Creamery in Fargo, North Dakota, and Bongards Cooperative in Perham, Minnesota, which is currently expanding.
This closure reflects broader changes in the regional dairy industry. In September 2023, Prairie Farms ceased milk bottling operations in nearby North Dakota. The industry anticipates existing facilities can absorb the redirected milk volume.
The impact of the closure on South Dakota's dairy sector is unclear. Tom Peterson, executive director of South Dakota Dairy Producers, was unavailable for immediate comment.
