Dakotafest in Mitchell has named Kelsey Geraets as the distinguished 2023 Woman Farmer/Rancher of the Year. Geraets, a notable figure near Colton, SD, helms her family's feedlot operation. Her journey in agriculture began early, feeding bottle calves, which kindled her lifelong zeal. South Dakota State University acknowledged her passion, awarding her an animal science degree in 2020.
Geraets holds the distinction of being the first female on the South Dakota Corn Growers Board. Her leadership also extends as the president of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Auxiliary and as a valued member of the South Dakota Beef Industry Council board.
Geraets was deeply honored, expressing her feelings of empowerment alongside other esteemed women in agriculture. This award underscores the increasing importance and influence of women in the sector. As Niki Jones, the marketing director for Dakotafest, notes, women offer fresh ideas and unique perspectives, vital for the evolving landscape of agriculture.
Echoing this sentiment, Geraets emphasized the unique nurturing nature women bring, often showing great patience and attention to detail. She aims to inspire future female agriculturists, urging them to embrace challenges, break barriers, and claim their rightful place alongside their male counterparts.
