Organic crop practices at venner farm

Join the S.D. Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) for a compelling field day at Venner Farm, located northwest of Pierre, SD, with a picturesque view of the Oahe Reservoir. This event is scheduled for Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT and is part of the USDA's Transitioning to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP).

 Participants will receive an educational tour of the Venner operation, including a field walk and discussions on subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) systems, which have been employed on 60% of their land.

This land supports a variety of organic crops such as yellow corn, blue corn, rye, barley, wheat, flax, sunflowers, field peas, and garbanzo beans, along with cover crops.

 The Venners, who began their journey towards organic certification in 2001, will share insights into their 20-year experience of organic farming and their dedication to soil-building practices aimed at enhancing their environment.

 Dr. Angela Jackson, the S.D. Organic Ag Transition Advisor with SDSPA, will offer insights on soil nutrients and available programs for farmers looking to transition to organic practices. Dr. Jackson brings her expertise as both a certified organic producer and a lead organic auditor to South Dakota.

This event does not include a provided lunch, so attendees are encouraged to bring their own meals for a networking session. Pre-registration is required and can be completed on the SDSPA's website.

This field day, supported by the USDA through the TOPP and administered by the AMS National Organic Program, offers a unique opportunity for agricultural professionals and farmers to deepen their understanding of organic farming.
