Protein Snack Boom Drives Meat Market Growth

Protein Snack Boom Drives Meat Market Growth

By Jamie Martin

According to a new report from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange, the meat snack sector is experiencing rapid growth as consumer preferences change.

Consumers are increasingly choosing foods that are high in protein, convenient, and easy to consume in smaller portions. The growing use of GLP-1 medications is also influencing this trend by encouraging healthier eating habits.

The report states that meat snacks are now a key area for product development. Producers are focusing on innovation to meet demand for clean-label, nutrient-rich foods with minimal processing.

“Consumer demand today is largely driven by a focus on protein content, nutrient density, clean labels and reduced processing. Meeting these preferences is crucial in today’s food landscape, and meat snacks check several of the boxes,” said Brian Earnest, lead animal protein economist with CoBank.

“We expect beef will continue to dominate the category, but with supplies constrained due to a contracting U.S. cattle herd, the opportunity for pork and poultry to offer value-oriented meat alternatives is rising,” said Earnest.

Industry data shows that meat snack sales have risen by more than 45% over the last four years, reaching $4.4 billion annually. This growth has resulted in significant investments, with over $1 billion added to processing capacity since 2020.

Major companies such as Jack Link’s, Chomps, and Archer Meat Snacks are expanding their operations. New production plants are being developed to meet growing demand and increase supply.

Despite its growth, the sector faces regulatory risks. New dietary guidelines recommend reducing highly processed foods, which could impact some meat snack products.

To address this, companies are introducing simpler products with fewer ingredients. Clean-label items and high-protein snacks are gaining popularity among consumers.

The market is also expanding beyond traditional buyers. Women, families, and younger consumers are becoming key customers, helping to increase demand across different groups.

With strong consumer demand, ongoing investments, and continuous innovation, the meat snack industry is expected to grow further in the coming years.
