The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) has released its June 2025 Organic Update, sharing important resources, field events, and learning tools for organic producers across the state.
The update highlights the continued growth of organic agriculture in South Dakota, focusing on education, marketing, and sustainable practices. A recent tour shared insights on growing and selling ancient grains, while an organic field day focused on diversified farm revenue.
A video series supports producers with monthly topics:
- March: Record keeping for organic crop inspections
- April: Natural and biodynamic methods for plant health
- May: The role of the International Organic Inspectors Association
The next Organic Chapter meeting in June will feature Dr. Eva Wray from the University of Arkansas, discussing how to control parasites in small ruminants.
Several upcoming field days are planned:
- June 20 at Prairiesun Organics: Exploring regenerative organic practices
- July 22 at Haroldson Farm: Using cover crops in vegetable farming
- Sept. 10 at Prairie Coteau Farm: Transitioning to organic garlic
- Sept. 20 at 465 Homestead: Honest discussion on organic transition
A July 11 webinar will help producers develop regenerative organic system plans, and a major gathering, From Soil to Market, takes place on Sept. 30, connecting producers and buyers.
The update also features Transition to Organic Program (TOPP) and Organic Regenerative Agriculture (O-RAPP) resources, including:
- Office hours and farm advising
- Videos on mushrooms, peas, land and soil practices
- Technical guides on no-till, soil conservation, and crop rotation
SDSPA continues to support producers with the knowledge and tools they need to grow strong organic systems in South Dakota.
