SDSU Extension Plans CAFO Training Event

SDSU Extension Plans CAFO Training Event

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University Extension invites operators of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) to attend an environmental training session on June 23, 2026, at the Crossroads Convention Center in Huron. The event focuses on helping livestock producers improve environmental management practices while meeting permit requirements.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., and the training program starts at 8:45 a.m. The event will continue through the afternoon and end around 4:45 p.m. Participants must register in advance, and the registration fee includes lunch, refreshments, and training materials. To register, visit the SDSU Extension Events page and search “CAFO”.

Specialists from SDSU Extension, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service will lead the presentations. The training covers several important topics connected to livestock production and environmental protection.

“Past attendees of this program have come away with at least one new practice they consider adopting related to land application, livestock feeding, air quality or soil conservation,” said Bob Thaler, Farm Credit Services of America Endowed Chair in Swine Production, Distinguished Professor and SDSU Extension Swine Specialist.

Experts will discuss manure management, livestock nutrition, soil conservation, water quality, and air quality. Sessions will also explain how producers can manage nitrogen and phosphorus during manure application and improve soil health through erosion and infiltration practices.

Additional presentations will focus on livestock permit requirements and environmental regulations connected to CAFO operations in South Dakota. Organizers say the training helps producers better understand environmental responsibilities while improving farm management practices.

The program also meets permit training requirements established under South Dakota’s General Water Pollution Control Permit for CAFOs. Existing permitted operations must have a representative attend approved environmental training within the required time period before receiving a new permit.

The event is open not only to livestock producers but also to manure applicators, policy makers, county officials, zoning board officers, and other interested individuals. Organizers encourage anyone interested in environmental management and livestock production to attend the educational program.
