SDSU's Guide to Advanced Vegetable Production

SDSU's Guide to Advanced Vegetable Production

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is excited to announce the South Dakota Virtual Vegetable Short Course series, scheduled for January 21, 23, 28, and 30, 2025. These sessions will run from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. CST, providing a platform for learning and discussion on various key aspects of vegetable production.

This educational initiative is designed specifically for small and medium-scale commercial specialty crop farmers, but it is also open to gardeners, Master Gardeners, nonprofit and business partners, and the public. The aim is to offer practical, science-based information that can significantly enhance vegetable production capabilities.

The series will cover a range of topics critical to modern agricultural practices. These include seasonal extension techniques, improving soil health, effective weed management strategies, the benefits of integrating cover crops, and strategies for adapting to extreme weather conditions. Such comprehensive coverage ensures that participants gain a holistic understanding of the various factors that influence successful vegetable production.

The sessions promise an interactive format, with ample opportunities for attendees to engage directly with presenters. This setup is designed to foster an environment where questions are encouraged, ensuring that participants can apply what they learn directly to their operations.

Highlighting the series will be presentations from both seasoned farmers and extension specialists, bringing insights from their extensive practical and research experiences. This blend of perspectives will enrich the learning experience, providing a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical applications.

Registration for this enlightening series is free, though it requires signing up to access the provided Zoom link. This not only facilitates ease of access for all participants regardless of their location but also ensures a broad reach. Additionally, all sessions will be recorded and later available on the SDSU Extension YouTube channel, making it easy for anyone unable to attend live to benefit from the information shared.

This initiative is supported by grants from the USDA NIFA Organic Transitions Program and the NCR SARE Professional Development Grant, highlighting its importance and relevance in advancing sustainable agricultural practices across the region. For more details on this event or to register, participants are encouraged to visit the SDSU horticulture research page.
