South Dakota farmers rally for property rights

South Dakota farmers rally for property rights

By Scout Nelson

In a significant move, farmers and ranchers in South Dakota have banded together to form a coalition, South Dakotans First, to fiercely advocate for their property rights. This alliance, a combined effort of local agriculturalists and landowners, aims to challenge the overreach of private companies seeking to use eminent domain for their gain.

Key players in this initiative include the South Dakota Farmers Union, Dakota Rural Action, and Landowners for Eminent Domain Reform. They're united by a common goal: ensuring that private property rights are respected, and that no private entity can unjustly seize land for corporate benefit.

Doug Sombke, president of the South Dakota Farmers Union, underscores the coalition's mission, emphasizing the need for legislative change that prioritizes the rights of property owners over private interests.

This sentiment is echoed by many in the community, like Aaron Johnson, an organic farmer and member of Dakota Rural Action. Johnson's personal encounter with a pipeline company's encroachment on his leased land highlights the urgency of the coalition's cause.

However, the challenge extends beyond state legislation. The coalition also targets local governance, where there's a significant push for transparency and public engagement in decision-making processes related to land use. Johnson’s struggles with the Lake County Commission exemplify the resistance they’re facing and the need for more public dialogue.

This initiative has already seen some local successes, with Minnehaha and Moody counties establishing ordinances to protect county land from hazardous pipeline projects. Yet, the fight is far from over. The recent controversy over land purchases for new prison facilities in Lincoln County further illustrates the ongoing struggle for property rights.

Sombke passionately expresses the community's sentiment: they demand respect and a voice in decisions impacting their lives and livelihoods. The coalition's message is clear and resonates with landowners statewide: property rights must not be sidelined for corporate profits.

The next step for South Dakotans First is urging state representatives to enact legislation that firmly supports individual property rights. Their journey is not just about protecting land; it's about safeguarding a way of life for South Dakota’s farmers and ranchers.
