South Dakota fieldwork progress and crop conditions

The National Agricultural Statistics Service of the USDA states. The ratings for the moisture content of the topsoil were 4% very short, 22% short, 68% adequate, and 6% surplus. The moisture content of the subsoil was 3% extremely short, 16% short, 74% adequate, and 7% surplus. 

Field Crops Report:

Corn condition was rated 2% very poor, 5% poor, 21% fair, 56% good, and 16% excellent. Corn silking was at 57%, well behind last year’s 78% and the five-year average of 65%. Corn dough stage was 18%, nearly 16% last year and ahead of the 12% average.

Soybean condition was rated 3% very poor, 7% poor, 18% fair, 61% good, and 11% excellent. Soybeans blooming was at 57%, behind 73% last year and 69% average. Setting pods were at 26%, behind 40% last year and 34% average.

Winter wheat condition was rated 0% very poor, 4% poor, 22% fair, 56% good, and 18% excellent. Winter wheat harvested was at 63%, near last year’s 66% and equal to the average

Spring wheat condition was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 25% fair, 65% good, and 5% excellent. Spring wheat harvested was 8%, behind last year and the average of 18%.

Oats condition was rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 21% fair, 62% good, and 13% excellent. Oats harvested were at 41%, near last year’s 40% and 37% average.

Sorghum condition was rated 0% very poor, 1% poor, 22% fair, 68% good, and 9% excellent. Sorghum headed was at 25%, well behind last year’s 68% and the 43% average.

Sunflower condition was rated 1% very poor, 4% poor, 28% fair, 58% good, and 9% excellent. Sunflowers blooming was at 2%, behind last year’s 15%.

Pasture and Range Report:

Pasture and range conditions were rated 3% very poor, 10% poor, 33% fair, 43% good, and 11% excellent.

The USDA report highlights mixed crop conditions and fieldwork progress across South Dakota, reflecting the varied moisture levels and crop stages.
