South Dakota inventory of all hogs and pigs on March 1, 2023, was 2.10 million head, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was up 4% from March 1, 2022, and up slightly from December 1, 2022.
Breeding hog inventory, at 305,000 head, was up 9% from March 1, 2022, and up 5% from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 1.80 million head, was up 3% from last year, but down slightly from last quarter.
The December 2022 - February 2023 South Dakota pig crop, at 1.81 million head, was up 12% from 2022. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 141,000 head, up 10% from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was 12.80 for the December - February period, compared to 12.55 last year.
South Dakota hog producers intend to farrow 141,000 sows during the March - May 2023 quarter, up 4% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for June - August 2023 are 140,000 sows, down 3% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago.
