South Dakota leads in grassland care

By Scout Nelson

In the latest installment of the "Our Amazing Grasslands" series, we focus on the effective management strategies employed in Hyde County, which have notably enhanced the natural ecosystem. The video story, released by the South Dakota Grassland Coalition (SDGC) and its partners, highlights the benefits of timing grazing to coincide with nature’s rhythms, a practice that not only supports livestock health but also bolsters wildlife populations and soil and water quality.

The holistic management approach allows for a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of land use, wildlife conservation, and economic viability. This strategy has led to the flourishing of both the local fauna and the overall profitability of agricultural operations.

A Hyde County producer shares, “We changed our priorities to taking care of the natural resources and suddenly we started to see the wildlife begin to flourish. Looking at the landscape in a holistic way allowed us to see the interconnectedness of land management, wildlife conservation, and, most importantly, profitability.”

The SDGC along with various conservation groups including Audubon Dakota, Ducks Unlimited, and The Nature Conservancy, among others, have contributed to this project to promote the sustainable use of grasslands. Each month, a new short video story is added to the South Dakota YouTube channel ‘Our Amazing South Dakota Resources’, focusing on different aspects of grassland stewardship.

The 2024 Grassland Planner, a tool designed to aid in the application of these sustainable practices, is now available both online and in print. It is filled with insights and guidelines on maintaining healthy ecosystems across South Dakota’s vast grasslands.

As the year progresses, each video story unveils unique methods and testimonials from across the state, showcasing the diverse and dynamic ways grassland management can lead to more resilient agricultural systems. For those interested in past stories or this progressive approach to agriculture, resources are readily accessible online for further exploration and education.
